The Koshi Tappu wildlife reserve is just about 45 minute flight and 2 hours drive away in the eastern Terai. A renowned birdwatchers paradise and wildlife refuge, Koshi Tappu spreads over 175 kilometers in Saptari and Sunsari district on the embankment of Sapta Koshi River. The wetland site was established as a wildlife reserve specially to preserve the habitat of wild Buffalo and hundreds of migratory as well as local species of birds. The reserve is also home to the Deer, Nilgai, Mugger crocodile, Ganges River Dolphin and other noted animals. The vast expanses of water created by the Koshi barrage, marshes, lagoons, mud flats and arable land that lies around it offers an outstanding wetland which has favored to create one of the best and finest bird watching sanctuaries in Asia.

The best time to visit this fabulous wildlife reserve is between October to March when much of the migratory and local bird, reptiles, flora & fauna can be sighted in and around the barrage and riverbank.

The best birds in Koshi Tappu: Swamp Francolin, Black-necked stock, Lesser Adjutant, Comb Duck, Falcated Duck, Spot-billed Duck, Cotton Pigmy Goose, Bear’s Pochard, Bailon’s Crake, Ruddy Crake, Greater Painted Snipe, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Indian courser, Black-bellied Tern, Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Bristle Grassbird etc.
